Elfin’s shredded wheat Easter nests recipe – straight from Mrs Claus’s kitchen

A year is a long, long time for an elf. Elfin our Christmas elf couldn’t bear to stay away from our family any longer. Easter is all about holidays, gifts, family time, food and chocolate – not much different to Christmas, so he decided to pay us a visit. We even have snow on the ground this year so our magic elf feels rather at home!

Elves often  bring small presents of fun activities for children. This time Elfin brought with him chocolate, mini eggs and shredded wheat and the recipe to make chocolate Easter nests – apparently straight from Mrs Claus’s kitchen. We got stuck into making this easy Easter classic right away.

Making our chocolate nests with Elfin’s helping hand

If you fancy making your own shredded wheat Easter nests you will need:

  • 250g milk or dark chocolate
  • 150g shredded wheat , crushed
  • 50g of butter cut into small cubes
  • 2 tablespoons of syrup
  • 2 x 100g bags mini chocolate eggs
  • 12 x paper bun cases

Preparation:

  1. Break the chocolate in a small bowl and add the butter. Melt the chocolate by placing over a pan of simmering water or at a low setting in the microwave. It is important not to over heat the mixture, so the chocolate doesn’t separate.
  2. Once melted remove from the heat and add the syrup (cook’s tip: Use a hot spoon to measure the golden syrup as it will slide off easier) and stir again to combine into a glossy sauce.
  3. Pour the chocolate mixture over the shredded wheat and stir until well mixed
  4. Spoon the chocolate shredded wheat into 12 cupcake cases and top each nest with 3 mini chocolate eggs.
  5. Chill the nests in the fridge for 2 hours until set.

…And here are the results! Yummy!

Elfin’s tips

You can substitute the shredded wheat for other types of cereal – cornflakes or rice crispies work well too – but shredded wheat looks the most nest like.

You can also decorate your chocolate nests with sprinkles, chocolate drops and even miniature Easter chickens.

Making chocolate Easter nests was fun and easy, even very young children can help, so no one is left out. Definitely a recipe to try again. Thanks Elfin (and thanks Mrs. Claus too!).
